Tales of mermaids existed all over the world. Some thought they were beautiful creatures that lured sailors to their deaths with their siren songs. Others thought they were horrific creatures that ate the men they captured. And then some thought they were things from fantasy and Disney movies. Truth was, they were all right. Just like humans, mermaids came in all varieties, including good and evil. Ariel was not one of the evil mermaids. In fact, the surface world fascinated her. Everytime a ship would sink, she would gather artifacts and store them in her secret cove. And every chance she got, she would sneak away to the surface to get glimpses of human life.

Her father always scolded her when he found out. He was worried about her, he knew how humans could be. They liked to catch and eat sea life. They polluted the oceans. To him, humans were cruel and murderous. But to Ariel they were wonderous. And that only intensified when she fell in love with a human. Black hair and blue eyes, he was gorgeous. Ariel knew she'd do anything to be with this man. Which led her to make a deal with the sea witch Ursula. In exchange for her voice, she could have human legs. Desperate, Ariel had agreed. Once she signed the contract, it was revealed to her that it was not Ursula she made a deal with, instead it was the Evil Queen, Regina.

Many years passed before, Ariel was once again called upon by Regina. This time, Regina had turned over a new leaf, and needed Ariel's help to get a message from Neverland to Storybrooke. Ariel agreed as long as the spell cast on her would be broken. If she could have her voice back. In helping Regina, not only did Ariel get her voice back, she made new friends and got a bracelet that let her have legs whenever she wanted. Finally she was free to live how she wanted.

Immediately she went to find her true love, but he was not to be found. Thanks to all the many dark curses, her love was missing. Ariel vowed to never stop looking for him, no matter where the journey took her or how long it would take. Knowing he was a pirate, Ariel went to the pirate town of Nassau. Maybe someone there had seen him. She went to everyone she saw and asked if they had seen a man that was tall, with dark hair, blue eyes, and went by the name of James Rogers. The brother of Snow White. And pirate.
