Gabriel Stokes, portrayed by Seth Gilliam, is a priest at a small parish church outside Atlanta. He is an extremely nervous man, who is not used to the hazards of the outside world, having been mostly sheltered inside his church after the outbreak began, living off of stored food from the nearby town's food drive. He also struggles with how his religious beliefs fit within this new world. He is introduced when Rick's group rescues him from walkers while he was out foraging, and he offers them shelter in his church. Rick discovers Gabriel had locked his congregation out of the church at the start of the outbreak, an action he remains remorseful for. He joins Rick's group as the church is overrun, though detests the use of violence. When they arrive at the relative safety of Alexandria, he attempts to convince Deanna that Rick's group is Satan in disguise, but eventually apologizes to all for sowing seeds of distrust. He becomes a useful member of Alexandria, both a man of the cloth as well as a protector on the community's walls. Tamiel from the Scavengers kidnaps Gabriel. Rick, Michonne, Rosita, Tara, and Aaron find Gabriel with the Scavengers, which leads to the Alexandrians' deal to exchange guns for an alliance. This alliance proves unfaithful, and Gabriel is involved in the war against the Saviors. As he tries to help save Gregory during the attack on the Sanctuary, Gabriel ends up sheltering in the same storage room where Negan himself is hiding. Though Negan helps him escape from the walker horde, Gabriel becomes a prisoner of the Saviors, and contracts a deadly infection that requires medical attention.
