Etherus (The Dark Sun) Darker alte ego.In the blasted expanse where the sun burned low and crimson, as a dying coal pressed against the sky, the tall wanderers moved with silent grace. Their skin gleamed like polished obsidian under the harsh light, ears tapering to sharp points that caught every whisper of the parched wind. Once guardians of verdant canopies now turned to dust, they had become shadows of endurance, their lithe forms wrapped in layered cloths woven from dune spider silk and bleached bone fibers. The wanderers traveled the cracked salt flats at dusk, when the dark sun's glare softened enough to spare their keen eyes. They sought the hidden oases—places where life still clung stubbornly to the poisoned earth. One among them, the swiftest scout, knelt at the edge of a silt-choked basin. Fingers traced ancient runes carved into stone half-buried by centuries of sandstorms. The marks spoke of a time before the great defiling, when their kind danced beneath a golden orb, and the world sang with green. Behind, the rest of the band followed in loose formation, spears of petrified wood balanced lightly in callused hands. Their leader, broad-shouldered for one of their slender race, scanned the horizon where dust devils spun like restless spirits. Thirst clawed at every throat, yet they did not speak of it. Words were precious, hoarded like the last drops of pure water. A tremor shook the ground. From the fractured ridge ahead rose hulking shapes—hulking guardians twisted by the same ancient magic that had scorched the world. Multi-limbed and armored in chitin, they charged with clicking hunger. The wanderers flowed into motion without command. Arrows of razor-sharp crystal flew true, striking joints and gaps. The swift scout vaulted forward, blades flashing in a deadly whirl, severing sinew and drawing ichor that steamed upon the hot stone. Battle ended as quickly as it began. The fallen beasts were stripped efficiently: meat dried for travel rations, shells fashioned into new tools. Victory brought no celebration, only grim necessity. As the dark sun dipped lower, painting the wastes in blood-red hues, the band pressed on toward the faint shimmer of rumored ruins—towers of a forgotten elven city said to hold a shard of the old power, a chance to coax one small corner of the world back toward life. Night fell cold and starless. Around a shielded fire of dried scrub and bone, they rested in wary silence. The elder healer mixed a bitter draught from cactus pulp and insect husks, passing the gourd from hand to hand. Eyes met in understanding: the road ahead would claim more before any hope bloomed. Yet they endured, as their kind had endured since the sun itself turned against all living things—fleet, proud, and unbreakable beneath the eternal, merciless glow. The wastes stretched on, but so did they.
