On July 4th, Ray, his girlfriend Julie, and their friends, Barry and Helen, go out of town to celebrate at a party. On their way back, they hit someone. They agree to dump the body in the ocean and never to speak of it again.
A year later, they all receive a note which reads, "I Know What You Did Last Summer". Freaked out that someone might've saw them that night, they soon realize that the person they ran over, wasn't really dead in the first place. Now, they must fight for their life from a hook-wielding fisherman, later known as Ben Willis.
It's been years since the Southport Massacre, as Ray stayed back in Southport to continue his fishing career, while his girlfriend, Julie, moved to go to college and heal from everything that happened. Close to the 4th, Ray visits Julie, trying to convince her to come back to Southport, but she tells him that she's still healing and needs time away.
When her best friend, Karla, wins a trip to the Bahamas on a radio station, she tells Julie that she should invite Ray. Calling him up, he tells her that he can't make it and that she should enjoy her time there. Karla invites her friend Will in place of Ray. When his friend tells him that he should go, that he would go with him, Ray agrees. On their way to Julie's dorm, they run into Barry's car, who it appears to have someone laying lifeless in front of it. As Ray goes to inspect it, he realizes that it's a trap, and his friend gets killed by the fisherman. The killer tries to run Ray down, but he jumps, and rolls down a hill to escape him.
While trying to enjoy their time in the Bahamas, Julie finds out that Ben is back to hunt her down, killing all the people they've come in contact, one by one. Will reveals to Julie that he is actually Ben Willis' son. Dragging her out to the graveyard where his dad is waiting for them, Ray shows up and fires blanks at Ben. Will jumps at Ray, weakening him. They get up as Will holds Ray in front of him for Ben to kill, but coming to in time, Ray jumps out of the way, only for Ben to kill his son. Enraged, Ben is fixing to kill Ray, but Julie shoots Ben several times, saying the phrase, "Just fucking die!", as Ben falls into the grave, mud covering him up. Ray walks over and holds Julie close.
The next morning, the Coast Guard tells them that a rescue team is on the way. They then find out that Karla actually survived as they all return back home. A while later, Julie and Ray bought a house together. As she gets ready for bed, she thought she heard someone in the house. Shaking her head, she sits down on the bed. As she stares at a bear in a chair, she can see the reflection of the fisherman in the bear's glass eye, as she is dragged underneath, screaming.
Present Day: After the Southport Massacre and the killings at Tower Bay, Ray developed psychological trauma, having nightmares/night terrors, where he would believe that Ben was still alive and coming after him. He would also be jumpy at times whenever someone would call his name, or tap him on the shoulder. Whenever he would see a fisherman's outfit, or even just a fishing pole, he would freak out and run. His lesser-known brother, Joseph, who was a Paramedic, learned about what happened, and tried to get him help. From going to therapists, to even admitting him into a psych ward, it took several months for Ray to finally get over everything. They decided to move away from Southport to Knoxville, Tennessee for a fresh start, and get away from the bad memories that Southport caused him. Now, to occupy his mind and time, he owns a bar that he named after himself.
