By early January 1985, Kate began experiencing strange symptoms she couldnโt explain โ sudden heat rolling under her skin, flashes of heightened senses, and the occasional unsettling shift in her eyes or ears. She kept it quiet, chalking it up to nerves and trauma. By the summer of 1986, she moved south to the Bahamas, taking a job as a bikini beach bar waitress where light clothing didnโt raise eyebrows and the warm air helped her manage the unpredictable heat. She blended in perfectly, hiding her condition behind neon lights, beach crowds, and long summer nights.
Everything changed in 1987 when Kate crossed paths with the team from Curious Goods โ Micki Foster, Ryan Dallion, and the everโsteady Jack Marshak. They were hunting cursed antiques, and Kateโs unusual senses made her stand out immediately. Jack recognized her condition for what it was: a supernatural wound, not a medical one. He began crafting monthly suppressant tonics to keep her stable, and Kate quietly joined their efforts. From 1987 to 1989, she lived a double life โ bikini bar waitress by day, mermaid performer for extra cash, and partโtime supernatural tracker for Curious Goods whenever her heightened senses could help locate a dangerous relic.
The work eventually took its toll. Kate grew more mature, more grounded, and more protective than anyone realized. She saw the strain on Micki and Ryan, the exhaustion in Jackโs eyes, and the way cursed objects could hollow out a personโs soul, from the inside out. In 1990, Jack finally discovered a cure that stabilized her condition for good. He begged her to stay on fullโtime after Ryanโs departure and Johnnyโs unreliability, but Kate had nothing left to give. Six years of fear, secrecy, and supernatural danger had worn her down. She wanted peace, not heroism, nor heroics.
Kate walked away from Curious Goods and reclaimed her life. She reconnected with Billy Peltzer, married him, and took a fully clothed, stable job as a tour guide at Clamp Tower. Her new short pageboy haircut that came from her last days of being a mermaid performer, and her dislike of anything supernatural came from six years of living too close to it. By the time the events of Clamp Tower rolled around, Kate Beringer โ now Kate Peltzer โ was finally free, cured, grounded, and determined never to face monsters again. Little did she know that little furry thing was soon to be back in all their lives.
