Alice Cullen, born Mary Alice Brandon in 1901 in Biloxi, Mississippi, had a troubled childhood marked by premonitions and a tragic loss. She had visions of her mother being murdered, but her family didn't believe her warnings, and her mother was later killed in a way Alice had foreseen. Following her mother's death and being mistreated by her stepmother, Alice was institutionalized in an asylum after her visions led to accusations of being a witch or changeling. While in the asylum, she was transformed into a vampire by a vampire who worked there, protecting her from the vampire James who was hunting her. Alice has amnesia regarding her human life and the events surrounding her transformation.
